This summer, the Harborside Shakespeare Company will be producing Shakespeare's well-known masterpiece, Hamlet!
In our production, you will see Shakespeare's classic tragedy set within the context of the 1930's Dustbowl. The realm of Denmark will inhabit the world of farm, failing since the death of Hamlet's father, the king of Denmark. His death brings whirling winds of change to the farm and its family as Hamlet himself strives to "set it right" and avenge his father, murdered by his uncle Claudius. As always, the HSC will bring Shakespeare's words to life with a creative soundtrack to match, featuring artists such as Mumford & Sons, Robert Plant and Patti Smith.
We have also chosen use the unconventional First Quarto sequence of the play, which features scenes in a slightly different order presented in the more commonly produced First Folio. But this year, we will be shaking things up! The major difference between the First Folio and the First Quarto sequence is the order of scenes in Act II. Primarily, in the Quarto sequence the famous "To Be, or Not to Be" speech appears much earlier in the play, and the scene in which Hamlet first meets the players falls later.
"I think the Quarto sequence makes a lot more sense for Hamlet's character arc," says Hynes. "It definitely adds to the drama of the play." Don't miss this inventive and exciting production of Hamlet, featuring an incredibly talented cast of community members!
